Digital TV An Introduction...
Welcome to Digital tv and radio. The aim of the site is to provide all the information needed in anticipation for the UK digital switchover.
Digital tv and the switchover has already stated in the UK, the benefits are more choice of channels and in a lot of cases a better quality of picture.
If you don't have freeview or one of the sky or cable packages then it is most likely that you currently have an analogue signal which you use to receive your tv channels.
This is fine at the moment but when your area changes over to
digital tv between now and 2012 you will no longer be able to receive tv unless you upgrade and purchase a set top box or a tv with digital hardware built in.
By purchasing either a set top box (such as freeview, sky or cable) you will be able to receive digital tv channels much in the same way as you previously received analogue tv channels. The other option is to upgrade your tv set to one which has built in freeview and in turn remove the necessity of purchasing a separate set top box.
What is digital tv and how to get it?
If you currently only have the five main UK tv channels then you almost certainly have analogue tv. Analogue tv comes through an aerial where as digital tv comes via one of the following methods: Set top box, Cable or Phone Connection.
When does the switchover start?
The switchover starts in parts of Cumbria during October 2007 and completes in 2012 (see DigitalUK for a more comprehensive breakdown).
What are the benefits?
In addition to those mentioned above you will receive more channels than standard which include: BBC Three, ITV2, ITV3, E4, More 4, Cbeebies, CBBC, CITV, S4C2, Sky News and FilmFour
